Professionalism is the conduct, behavior and attitude of someone in a work or business environment. It is also the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. (Meriam-Webster dictionary)

Here are a few tips on how to be professional at work:

1)   PUNCTUALITY:

One of the personality traits of a good professional is punctuality. He or she also does the right thing at the right time.

2)   POSITIVE ATTITUDE AT WORK:

Always be cheerful and look very bright with a smile. Leave the personal issues at the entrance.

3)   DRESS APPROPRIATELY AT ALL TIMES:

Outfit is such an integral part of professionalism. Every professional must learn to dress properly at all times; clean, well ironed clothes, tidy hair, nice makeup, good perfume. Dressing professionally tells a lot about your person and determines how people treat you.

4)   BE MINDFUL OF WHAT YOU SAY:

It is extremely important that you are mindful of what you say at work.

Avoid swearing, cursing, shouting, screaming or fighting at Work. Be calm at all times.

Avoid giving out too much information. Keep confidential information confidential.

Also, learn to complain less.

5)  SHARE KNOWLEDGE:

A true professional is always willing to share useful information or lend a helping hand to other colleagues.

6)   RESPECT:

It is important that you carry yourself with self-respect and integrity and also treat other colleagues with the respect that they deserve. Learn to be polite at all times.

7)   CONTROL YOUR EMOTION:

The work space is an area where you must learn to control your anger and other emotions that could lead to hostility.

8)   OBEY COMPANY POLICIES:

Every true professional must obey all company policies. This goes to show that you are disciplined and respectful. Obeying work policies is advantageous to your career.

9)   GET YOUR JOB DONE:

Ensure on a daily basis you prepare your TO-DO-LIST for the day and strive to achieve it. It is also important to assess yourself at the end of each week to see how much you have achieved. Every professional must be RESULT ORIENTED. 

10)  LOOK FORWARD TO EACH NEW DAY:

 A true professional looks forward to the opportunities that each new day brings. You shouldn’t dread going to work, instead, savor the opportunity to learn and grow on a daily basis.
